Major Depressive Disorder

Together, We Can Find Strength

Major depressive disorder (MDD), also known as clinical depression, is a serious mental health condition that affects how you feel, the way you think, and how you act. It can cause feelings of sadness or a persistent feeling of emptiness and a loss of pleasure in activities you used to enjoy.

What is Major Depressive Depression (MDD)?

  • Mental health:

MDD increases the risk of developing other mental health conditions like anxiety disorders or substance abuse. It can create a cycle of negativity and hopelessness, making it difficult to cope with daily life.

  • Work or school:

Concentration problems, fatigue, and low motivation can make it difficult to perform well at work or school. Individuals with MDD may struggle to meet deadlines, attend classes, or participate actively.

  • Physical health:

MDD can disrupt sleep patterns and appetite, leading to weight changes and increased vulnerability to other physical illnesses. It can also make it harder to maintain healthy habits and seek medical care.

  • Relationships:

MDD can strain relationships with family, friends, and romantic partners. Withdrawal, irritability, and a lack of interest in shared activities can create distance and frustration.

Impact of MDD

Major Depressive Disorder Impact

Prevalence of MDD

Approximately 9.5% of American adults ages 18 and over grapple with a depressive illness each year. This translates to millions of people struggling with mood disorders, impacting a substantial portion of the population.  The burden falls unevenly, however, with women nearly twice as likely to experience major depressive disorder compared to men. This statistic highlights a significant gender disparity in mental health, requiring increased awareness and access to support.

Major Depressive Disorder Signs

Symptoms of MDD

Symptoms of MDD can include persistent low mood or sadness, a loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed, changes in appetite or sleep patterns, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, difficulty concentrating, and even thoughts of death or suicide. If you are experiencing five or more of these symptoms for at least two weeks, it's important to seek professional help.

What is Treatment Resistant Depression(TRD)?

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) describes a form of major depressive disorder (MDD) where standard treatments like medication and therapy haven't provided significant relief. It's estimated to affect around 20% of people with MDD.

Symptoms of TRD

TRD shares many symptoms with MDD, including:

  • Persistent low mood or sadness

  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities

  • Changes in appetite or sleep patterns

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt

  • Fatigue

  • Thoughts of death or suicide

Identifying TRD

If you've tried at least two different antidepressants at adequate dosages for a sufficient time (typically 6-8 weeks) without significant improvement, you may be experiencing TRD. It's crucial to discuss your experience with a mental health professional for proper diagnosis.

Embracing the Journey

Living with major treatment resistant depression is a personal experience, and  here are the 5 Ways to Move Forward.

Re-evaluate Treatment Plan

Discuss options with your doctor. This could involve adjusting medications, exploring alternative therapies like ketamine or TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation), or even a combination approach.

Consider Specialized Treatments

For severe or persistent TRD, options like TMS or ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) may be explored under the supervision of a qualified psychiatrist.

Focus on Healthy Habits

Prioritize getting enough sleep, regular exercise, and a balanced diet to improve your overall well-being and support your mental health.

Seek Support System

Surround yourself with supportive loved ones; consider joining a TRD support group to connect with others who understand, or find a therapist specializing in TRD who can provide guidance and encouragement.

Break the Stigma

Talking openly about your struggles with TRD can help raise awareness and empower others to seek help. Remember, asking for help is a courageous step toward recovery.
